Exotics and steels

Milling exotic materials

Exotic materials:

  • Stainless steels
  • Titanium
  • Inconel
  • Duplex
  • Hastelloy
  • Nickel based materials

Most common problems to face:

  • Abrasiveness of the material
  • Resonance of the machine and/or workpiece
  • Vibrations of the workpiece and/or tool

How to handle:

  • Stable clamping of tool and material
  • Coolant
  • Chip flow

VHC new generation end mills for machining exotic materials:

  • VHVTR: 4 Flute for roughing / Semi finishing
  • HABM: Ball nose for finishing / Semi finishing
  • HAMF (L-XL): Multiple flute finishing

VHVTR

  • Sharp geometry
  • Polished flutes
  • Coating with low friction coefficient

"Try to have as much coolant on the tool as possible. Recommended oil percentage of the emulsion coolant if possible between 8-12%. Also try to have a smooth chip-flow so the chip can leave the flute easily."
